AI-powered medical imaging in the Chinese healthcare market: revolutionizing radiology

By Frank-Christian Raffel

The healthcare sector in China is in the midst of a profound transformation, driven by the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in medical imaging. Through massive investment and rapid technological advancement, AI is transforming radiology while providing new opportunities to improve diagnostic accuracy, optimize workflows and expand access to healthcare services.

The automation of image analysis through AI makes it possible to significantly reduce the workload of radiologists and minimize human error – a decisive advantage in view of the large and aging population with a limited number of radiologists in China (see Fig. 1).

AI-based solutions not only offer greater efficiency, but also improved diagnostic reliability, particularly in areas such as oncology, cardiology and neurology.

Despite increasing competition from international players, many Chinese companies are also driving the market. Nevertheless, there are still underserved sectors, such as breast cancer screening, which offer considerable potential in view of the high market growth.

Currently, the integration of AI is particularly visible in large Class III hospitals (according to China’s systematic categorization system) with over 500 beds. The broader rollout promises further strong growth of up to approx. RMB 155 billion (approx. EUR 19.8 billion) (see Fig. 2).

Overall, AI in medical imaging offers the opportunity to transform the Chinese healthcare system in the long term. It promotes greater efficiency, enables improved patient outcomes and could help democratize access to quality healthcare in rural and underserved regions of China in the long term.
